November is ubiquitous for comfort food. It is mashed potatoes with Lentil Loaf, followed by Dutch Apple Pie, and then finished later with a few cookies, and I LIVE for this time of year. I am a die hard comfort food lover and when presented with a big bowl of mashed potatoes covered with gravy or a salad, I will choose the mashed potatoes every time.
HOWEVER, during this time of comfort food indulgence, I also think there is a place for the humble, light, satisfying yet unfilling, no-stretchy-pants-requored smoothie. This time of comfort food eating has to be looked at like a marathon, not a sprint, and sometimes to happily taste each and every creamy, saucy, savory and sweet comfort food masterpiece, a little smoothie interlude is required.
During this time of year I tend to stick to a pattern: casserole, smoothie, pie, smoothie, cookies, smoothie, mashed potatoes, smoothie. It is a welcomed break for my digestion and it tastes like a tall glass of pumpkin pie.
I can also see that this Pumpkin Pie smoothie would be a great addition to Thanksgiving day for one of two reasons:
- You are the fearless cook in the kitchen, chopping, slicing, and dicing you way to the best meal of the year. You woke up before the sun to take on The Meal and will be doing your thing, creating a masterpiece, for hours to come. You are the Thanksgiving Warrior and have no time to consider sitting down to a proper breakfast, not with 186 dishes left to go, SO you reach for the Pumpkin Pie Smoothie. It is cold, to battle all the heat in the kitchen. It is sippable, allowing you to sneak in breakfast without burning the side dishes. It tastes like pie, which keeps your spirits high as you press onward.
- Or perhaps you are not the cook, but you are prepping for the best meal of the year and need to be ready to eat all 186 said dishes that are lovingly being prepared in the kitchen. So instead of going without food or researching the hallow leg theory, you want to reach for something that will stave off the hangries, but leave you with plenty of room for the feast. Your stretchy pants are ready, and now, armed with this smoothie, so are you.
May your glass be ever full of Pumpkin Pie Smoothie.
