Sweet and Sour Tofu with paleo sweet and sour sauce

Takeout turns healthy!

Crispy and golden pan-seared tofu, sweet and juicy pineapple, crisp bell peppers and onions are tossed in an irresistible sweet and sour sauce. Served over rice for the perfect bite!

Reasons to love this recipe:

  • It's a 30 minute meal you'll want to put in your regular rotation!
  • All the flavor of takeout but its paleo, vegan, and refined sugar free.
  • Made with just 9 ingredients (including the sauce!)
  • It's versatile! Add any veggies you'd like!

What you'll need:

  • 1 batch Healthy Sweet and Sour Sauce
  • Firm tofu - regular, not sprouted, works best here
  • Arrowroot starch - we use this to lightly bread the tofu and create a crispy crust!
  • Bell pepper - any color will do!
  • Pineapple - fresh, thawed frozen, or canned all work!
  • Onion
  • Olive or avocado oil

How to make sweet and sour tofu:

If you are serving with rice, start cooking that right away.

Step one is to make a batch of the sweet and sour sauce. It's as simple as whisking the ingredients together in a pot. Placing it over medium heat and whisking until it's thickened. 7 minutes tops!

Next, toss the tofu with arrowroot starch to coat. Heat some oil in a cast iron pan (or nonstick) and once warm, add in the tofu, being careful not to crowd the pan. The tofu will stick together. Sear on each side until golden. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Add in the onion, bell pepper, and pineapple. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent. Add the tofu back into the pan along with the sweet and sour sauce. Stir to combine and warm through. Serve over rice. Enjoy!
