You'll never believe this gluten free oven fried tofu is baked and not fried. It is impossibly crispy and crunchy! Ready to be dunked in your favorite sauce!

Picture this: A perfectly portioned slice of tofu gets coated in a gluten free crust and baked until golden brown and crispy. You dunk a just-baked nugget in ketchup and crunch your way through your first bite. The tofu is soft and "meaty". The coating is so crispy it shatters in your mouth.

You wonder "HOW on earth is this crispy bite of joy not fried?!?!"

But instead of contemplating one of life's most puzzling questions, you grab another nugget and repeat.

But, let me clue you in on this crispy situation. The secret to achieving an ultra crispy and crunchy coating that tastes and looks fried, while still keeping things healthy (aka baked in the oven), is corn flakes. Yes, breakfast cereal.

Which, in a strange twist of fate, it produces the most savory, salty, perfect oven fried tofu. I am talking fried chicken level crunchy.

Just be sure to grab unsweetened corn flakes. While the frosted kind are more than good, they won't be great in this oven fried tofu.

Besides the flakes, this fried tofu recipe needs just 2 other ingredients. Garbanzo bean flour, which will be used to make a batter that the corn flakes will adhere to, and tofu.

When choosing tofu, try and find High Protein Tofu. Grabbing this style will mean you don't have to spend time pressing out the water from firm or extra firm tofu. That means dinner is on the table even faster.

Description

You'll never believe this gluten free oven fried tofu is baked and not fried. It is impossibly crispy and crunchy! Ready to be dunked in your favorite sauce!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (16) oz package high protein tofu, cut into squares
  • ¾ cup garbanzo bean flour
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups crushed corn flakes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Grease a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Crush the cornflakes: place the cornflakes in a zip top bag and smash them to your hearts content. Or at least until they are in small pieces. Measure out your 3 cups once the flakes are crushed. Transfer them into a bowl.
  3. Bread the tofu: In a bowl, whisk together the garbanzo bean flour, water, and salt. Dunk a piece of tofu into this mixture. Coat all sides evenly and let the excess drip off. Next, roll it in the cornflakes making sure to coat all sides. Place on a greased baking sheet and repeat.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
