How to Make Seven Spice

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Lebanese Seven Spice is a warm and fragrant spice blend that adds big flavor to soups, braises and more!

Lebanese seven spice labeled in a jar.

7 Spice, also known as Baharat, is a staple in Lebanese cooking. It is richly flavored, warming and adding instant heartiness to any recipe.

Reasons to love this recipe!

  • Making this mix at home lets you control the quality of spices for the best flavor!
  • Comes together in 5 minutes and keeps for at least 6 months.
  • Can be used to flavor anything from soup to chicken to tofu!
A spoon in a jar of Lebanese seven spice.

Ingredients:

Seven spice can vary in ingredients from brand to brand and cook to cook. This is my go-to blend, but swaps and additions are listed below.

  • Allspice
  • Coriander
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon
  • Pepper
  • Ginger
  • Nutmeg
The spices needed to make 7 spice in jars.

Additions and substitutions:

Since 7 spice is so versatile, if you are missing one of the above spices, just swap it out with one below! Or add 1-2 teaspoons in addition, to adjust the mix to your taste.

If you can, try and use allspice, pepper, and cloves, to me they make the blend!

  • Turmeric
  • Cardamom
  • Paprika
  • Cumin
  • White pepper
  • Fenugreek
  • Possible additions to seven spice.
  • Whole spices in dishes.

Want to use whole spices?

If you have whole spices in your pantry, feel free to use those here! The process is a bit longer with this method, but the flavors are extra fresh!

Grind each spice in a spice grinder before measuring. Large spices like nutmeg and cinnamon are best grated on a microplane.

Storage:

Store leftover spice mix in a lidded jar, I usually use a mason jar, in a cool dark place for up to 6 months. It won't go bad, but after this, it will slowly loose its flavor.

How to use Lebanese 7 Spice:

It is commonly used to cook meat like chicken and lamb, but it adds depth of flavor to SO many dishes.

  • Use it in Lebanese Lentil Soup.
  • And in these Lebanese Lentil Meatballs.
  • Add a spoonful to your next batch of hummus for a flavorful twist.
  • Rub tofu with olive oil, seven spice, salt, and bake at 425 degrees for 20-30 minutes.
  • Sprinkle it on warm buttered toast.
  • Swap it for the seasonings in these sweet potato fries!
  • Add it to traditional Lebanese Loubya, a green bean and tomato stew.

Delish! Been getting more adventurous with food choices lately and this has opened my eyes up to more than the classic salt and pepper. Where has this been all my life!? Loving it.
