This easy homemade iced chai tea latte beats Starbucks every time! It's perfectly spiced, creamy, and sweet!
Starbucks makes a mean chai tea latte. You know who makes an even better one? You!
How, you ask? With this recipe. This better than Starbucks Chai Tea Latte is every bit as decadent and tastes darn close to the SB original, but you can customize your homemade version exactly to your tastes. And making it at home means you control the quality of ingredients which greatly improves the flavor for a fraction of the cost!
Reasons to love this recipe:
- It's quicker than a Starbucks run, not to mention more affordable!
- You control the sweetness level and the sweetener.
- Can be paleo, naturally sweetened, or dairy free.
Ingredients and Substitutions:
- Chai Concentrate - I STRONGLY recommend making your own with this recipe. It takes 30 minutes and you will have enough concentrate for the week. And it's far more flavorful than store-bought concentrate. In a pinch, look for concentrate from a small batch brand. In my experience they have the best and most authentic flavor.
- Milk of choice - dairy, soy, oat, almond, coconut, you name it. Whatever you prefer works here. Soy happens to be my favorite - I love its super creamy texture and boost of protein!
How to make an iced chai tea latte:
Make your concentrate: Follow this recipe to make the best homemade chai concentrate. It is base off of masala chai, which gives the most authentic flavor. Feel free to customize it to suit your tastes!
Chill: Let the concentrate cool at room temperature. At this point you can use it to make a latte or pop it in the fridge for later use.
Serve: Pour equal amounts of chai concentrate and milk over ice. I usually use ¾ cup of each for a 12 oz latte. For a 16 oz, use 1 cup each milk and concentrate.
Storage:
Store concentrate and milk separately in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Chai Concentrate vs Chai Powder
Homemade chai concentrate has the most authentic chai flavor. In a pinch you can use chai powder. I only recommend powders that are free of milk powder, sugar, and other additives. I prefer to add my milk of choice and sweeten to taste. This is the chai powder that I recommend.
Chai Latte Caffeine
When using the homemade chai concentrate recipe, there are 94mg of caffiene per cup of concentrate.
If you are using ¾ cup of concentrate in your 12 oz latte (since the other ¾ cup is milk), there are 71mg of caffeine.
Dirty Chai Latte
Looking for a dirty chai latte? Add 1-2 shots of espresso to your chai! It adds caffeine and the rich flavor of coffee. Stir in extra sweetener if needed.
