Four ingredient Ginger Turmeric Shots can be made in either a blender or a juicer and are PACKED with health benefits! Sweet, spicy, and addicting!

These Ginger Turmeric Shots will add some pep into your step! They are spicy, sweet, and immediately make you feel GOOD!
Making them at home ensures you are getting the most nutrients possible! Store-bought shots are often too old to retain their nutrients. They are all burn with no benefits.
Reasons to love this recipe!
- These shots can be made in a blender or juicer!
- They are packed with health promoting benefits!
- And are naturally vegan, gluten free, and paleo.
Ingredients and substitutions:
- Oranges - oranges add sweetness and help balance the spiciness of the ginger. Any variety of orange works well in this recipe. I usually use an heirloom navel orange (when I can find them) or cara cara orange since these tend to be sweeter.
- Lemons - add brightness. You can also use limes!
- Ginger - fresh ginger adds mega health benefits. No need to peel it!
- Turmeric - fresh turmeric adds even more health benefits. No need to peel it!
- Black pepper - helps to activate the turmerics health benefits. We only need a pinch, so you won't even taste it.
- Water - helps the blender get moving. You may need more or less depending on your blender. If you are using a juicer, omit it.
How to make ginger turmeric shots:
Prep: Use a knife to cut off the skin from the oranges and lemons. Chop the ginger into 1-2 inch chunks.
Blend: Add all the ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth.
Strain: Pour the juice through a nut milk bag or cheese cloth. Squeeze the pulp to extract all the juice. Enjoy!
Storage:
These shots are best when consumed within 48 hours. Longer and the shots will still taste delicious, but they will start to loose their nutrients.
To store them in the fridge, place them in a jar or lidded container and store in the fridge for up to 2 days.
For longer storage, pour the shots into a freezer safe jar and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before consuming.
What if I don't have a high speed blender?
If you have a standard, not a high speed blender like a Vitamix, there are a few tricks to make blending this recipe easier!
- Blend in 2 steps. Add just the lemons, oranges, and water to your blender and blend until smooth. Then add in the turmeric, ginger, and black pepper and blend again. Having the liquid extracted from the lemons and oranges will make blending the tougher ginger and turmeric easier.
- Use more water as needed. Chances are you will need more water to get the blender working. Add a little at a time until the blender gets moving. You can also use orange juice so you don't water down the flavor of the shots.
- Chop the ginger and turmeric into smaller pieces.
- Use fresh ginger and turmeric. Fresher, plumper, pieces will blend much easier!
Can I make this in a juicer?
Absolutely! Pass the lemons, oranges, ginger and turmeric through your juices. Then stir in a pinch of black pepper to the finished juice. Omit the water.

All the benefits of turmeric listed above are activated by black pepper! Just a pinch ensures that you are maximizing the turmerics potential. And it's such a small amount, you won't taste it in the finished shots.
Ways to drink ginger turmeric shots
For me, ginger turmeric shots are SPICY! They make me feel amazing, but I have to give myself a pep talk before each shot. Here are a few ways I have come up with to help reduce the burn:
- Water the shots down - you can add more water or juice to a shot to reduce the spiciness.
- Have something on hand to chase the shot with - eating a fresh strawberry and drinking a glass of water after a shot does wonders!
- Add a shot to a glass of iced tea or a smoothie. You'll still get the benefits without the intense burn!

- 8 ounces ginger, cut into 1-2 inch chunks
- Pinch black pepper
- ½ cup water, more or less as needed
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour the juice through a nut milk bag or cheese cloth. Squeeze the pulp to extract all the juice.
- Enjoy!
Notes
To make in a juicer: Pass the lemons, oranges, ginger and turmeric through your juices. Then stir in a pinch of black pepper to the finished juice. Omit the water.
Storage: To store them in the fridge, place them in a jar or lidded container and store in the fridge for up to 2 days. For longer storage, pour the shots into a freezer safe jar and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before consuming.
Halving the recipe: if you are using a juicer, halving the recipe should be no problem. In a blender, however, halving the recipe makes it very difficult for the blender to blend properly.

I went to town on this and tripped up the recipe and then made coconut vegan icecream with the pulp!!! Love it!
I’d love to try this, but confused about the measurements for turmeric and ginger. They are not liquid ingredients, but the recipe calls for ounces.
Hi Carey, that is a great question! Since fresh ginger and turmeric are hard to measure in cups (since each piece has such a unique shape) you will want to use the produce scale in the grocery store or a home kitchen scale, to measure out your fresh turmeric and ginger in ounces.
Delish. I’ve been adding to very warm water. Adding a bit of honey. Yum. Do you think any nutrients/benefits get destroyed or heated too much?
★★★★★
Hi Jared! So glad you are enjoying the recipe. As long as you don't boil the mix, the benefits should still be in tact.
how many ounces is 1 shot?
Hi! 1.5 ounces in one shot.
How much is considered a shot, would that be like a shot glass/jigger?
Hi Alisa, a standard shot would be 1 shot glass (also 3 tablespoons worth), but feel free to take as much or little as you like :)
Hi Laurel! My father is 68 years old and still eats like a teenager. He suffers from Gout, High Blood Pressure, Pre-Diabetic, High Cholesterol, and of course he's a bit overweight. He is tall almost 6' and weighs 225lbs. I am going to start his mornings with this ginger tumeric shot. Can you point me to some easy meals to implement into his diet to help his health?
★★★★★
Hi Rachel! I would love to help :) The best place to start is with any vegetables, grains, and fruits that he already likes and then build from there. Adding a few more healthy ingredients at a time. Are there any vegetables that he enjoys? Feel free to email me too. [email protected]
Have you ever added jalapeno to this? Trying to figure out what amount would be good. Thanks!
Hi Fiona, I haven't added jalapeno myself. I would recommend starting small, tasting and and adding more as needed :)
Really nice! I added 3 teaspoons of cinnamon as well. Any hints for avoiding the staining of the food processor or bullet mixer cup? Thank you.
Hi Beth, the best way to get rid of those pesky turmeric stains is to place the food processor or blender outside in the sunshine. After a few hours, all of the yellow color will be gone :)
Hey there! If I only have powdered turmeric, how much would I put in? Thank you!!
Hi Heather, I have not experimented with this recipe using powdered turmeric. I would recommend adding to taste.
What kind/brand of juicer do you use?
Hi Cindy! I most often use my vitamix blender (I find it easier to clean!), but if I use my juicer it is a Breville Juice Fountain Plus.
Since I have adhd, I don’t take things when I should…. Ugh… but, i was thinking of making and doing ice cubes and throwing the cubes in a smothie
Are8 ounces of ginger and 8 Ounces of turmeric add up to a pound of these roots… and with only a half cup of water, are you sure that measurement isn’t grams?
Hi Brigitte, yes, I am sure :) If you were to make ginger turmeric shots with a juicer, no water would be added. It is just enough water to get the blender moving. Of course, feel free to adjust the water to taste. The recipe will yells a juice shop style spicy and intense ginger shot. Happy cooking!
Can orange and lemon juice be used in place of actual oranges and lemons? Wondering if that would diminish the nutrient content?
Hi Helga, great question! You are correct in your assumption. Using store bought juice will diminish the nutrient content.
Hello,
First of all thank you for the detailed recipe.
I have tried my first ginger and turmeric shot first thing in the morning on the empty stomach. Unfortunately, stomach went upset and felt burn alike for the rest of the day. Should I eat immediately after taking a shot or dilute it with more water? What would you advise? Also can I mix a shot with the protein shake?
These things WORK. I’ve been doing three a day for like a week now. I don’t strain mine so they’re thicker, even though I dilute the whole batch with 2 cups instead of 1/2 a cup of water. And then I mix each shot individually with even more water when I take them. But I’ll tell you what, I don’t think I’ll ever stop taking these! First of all, taking one of these feels like doing a line of cocaine. Lol. It’s like an instant hit of alertness. And secondly, of course, the myriad of health benefits associated with turmeric and ginger intake. Inflammation, cancer, Alzheimer’s, muscle soreness, PMS, menstrual pain, allergies, digestion, anxiety. I mean the list goes on and on. Thank you for sharing this recipe! I’m pushing this stuff on all my family and friends now. Lol.
