Gluten Free Apple Crisp is filled with tender, juicy baked apples and a golden brown cinnamon oat crumble. Can be naturally sweetened!
What could be more perfect than tender, juicy, cinnamon apples baked until they start to caramelize, topped with a golden brown cinnamon oat crumble that is equal parts crispy crunchy and melt-in-your-mouth?
Scooped into a bowl with a dollop of melty vanilla bean ice cream?
100% positive this will be our dessert all Fall long.
Reasons to love this recipe:
- No one will know it's gluten free! The crisp is every bit as good, if not better, than the classic.
- You only need ONE gluten free flour and some oats.
- And if you can't find gluten free oat flour, you can simply make your own by grinding oats into flour in your blender.
- No starches or gums! You will only whole grains in this recipe.
- You can make this recipe ahead of serving! Simply reheat and enjoy!
Ingredient's you'll need:
- Apples - I like a mix of apples for a more complex flavor! Try half Golden Delicious and half Braeburn.
- Brown sugar - coconut sugar works great too!
- Oat flour - for thickening the apple filling and for the crumble topping
- Lemon juice
- Cinnamon - you can add a dash of ginger too for a fun spin
- Cane sugar - cane sugar works best in the crisp topping. Coconut sugar works too, but it will cause the crisp to have a dark brown color. Delicious, but not as close to a traditional crisp.
- Rolled oats - be sure they are certified gluten free.
- Baking powder
- Vegan butter - vegan butter creates the best flavor and texture, but you can substitute for coconut oil if that's what you have in your pantry. My easy vegan butter and Miyoko's brand work great in this recipe.
The best way to cut apples for crisp:
How you cut your apples can make a big difference in how the crisp turns out.
My favorite method is to first, slice the apples into thin ⅛th inch strips. Next, slice those in half width-wise. This creates apples that are thin enough to cook quickly, but small enough to be bite size -- the perfect combo!
How to make apple crisp:
Are you ready to get started on this gluten free apple crisp?!
First, mix together the sliced apples, brown or coconut sugar, oat flour, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Toss to coat each apple.
Pour the apples into an 8x8 inch baking pan.
Next, whisk together all the topping ingredients except the butter. Add in the butter and use your fingertips to "pinch" the butter into the crumble. You'll know it's mixed once the crisp holds its shape when pressed together and there are no stray bits of flour in the bottom of the bowl.
Sprinkle the crisp topping in an even layer over the apples. Bake until the apples are tender and the top is golden brown. Serve with scoops of ice cream and enjoy!
