This creamy and decadent hojicha latte is made with maple syrup and milk. A low caffeine drink to enjoy any time of day!
This hojicha latte recipe has quickly taken the place of my daily brew!
It tastes uber decadent and rich, but is secretly healthy and packed with antioxidants!
Preparing a hojicha latte is similar to making a matcha latte - both teas are brewed from powder. The twist is that hojicha is nearly caffeine free making it the perfect drink to enjoy any time of day.
Reasons to love this recipe!
- Hojicha lattes are delicious brewed hot or cold!
- This tea has a VERY low caffeine content. And it is not decaffeinated by chemicals or steam.
- You can use your milk and sweetener of choice to make this latte vegan, paleo, keto, etc.
So, what is hojicha?!
Hojicha is a roasted Japanese green tea. Roasting gives it a rich nutty flavor unlike the typical grassy flavor of green tea. To me, it drinks like a coffee/tea hybrid.
The roasting process removes most of the caffeine from the tea, making it the perfect anytime drink. A cup of hojicha has just over 7 mg of caffeine.
This hojicha latte recipe uses ground hojicha, but it can also be purchases as loose leaf.
Ingredients and substitutions:
- Hojicha powder - I use this brand and love it. You can also brew a latte with loose leaf hojicha. Pour ¼ cup boiling water over 2-3 teaspoons of loose leaf hojicha and let steep for 5 minutes. Strain, then proceed with the recipe as written.
- Boiling water
- Milk of choice - any milk you like will work here! I tend to reach for soy or oat milk.
- Sweetener of choice - I am partial to maple syrup in this recipe, but honey, agave, or sugar will all work. If using sugar, make sure it dissolves in the hot liquid to avoid a gritty texture.
How to make a hot hojicha latte:
Heat your milk: Add the milk and sweetener to a small saucepan and heat until steaming over medium heat.
Steep hojicha: Combine the hojicha powder and water in a small bowl and whisk until combined. Pour into your mug.
Combine: Top with warm milk and stir to combine. Enjoy!
How to make an iced hojicha latte:
Steep hojicha: Combine the hojicha powder and hot water in a small bowl and whisk until combined. Stir in your sweetener and pour into a glass filled with ice.
Combine: Top with cold milk and stir to combine. Enjoy!
What type of hojicha is best for lattes?
I prefer hojicha powder, also called "matcha style" or ground hojicha. It brews like matcha tea and leaves all the antioxidants in the cup.
You can also use loose leaf hojicha tea. Instead of whisking the boiling water with hojicha powder, pour the water over 1-2 teaspoons of loose leaf hojicha and let it steep for 5 minutes. Strain, then proceed with the recipe as written.
Does hojicha contain caffeine?
Since hojicha is a variety of green tea, it does contain caffeine. However, the process of roasting the tea to impart its signature flavor removes almost all of the caffeine.
One cup of brewed hojicha tea contains just over 7 mg of caffeine. To compare, a cup of green tea contains about 50 mg, a cup of coffee, 95 mg, and a latte, 150 mg.
As someone who is highly sensitive to caffeine, hojicha does not interrupt my sleep, even when consumed in the evening.
