Vegan Tartar Sauce - this bright, creamy, fresh sauce couldn't be easier! Made with 5 ingredients and ready in 5 minutes.

This vegan tartar sauce doesn't skip a beat.
It has allll the flavor of traditional tartar sauce. It is luxuriously creamy, perfectly tart thanks to dill pickles and lemon juice. With added complexity thanks to the a few chopped capers. Fresh dill and a pinch of salt and pepper round this sauce out perfectly.
Reasons to love this recipe!
- A 5 minute recipe that adds BIG flavor to a variety of dishes!
- Made with just 5 simple ingredients.
- Vegan and gluten free.
Ingredients and Substitutions:
- Vegan mayo - I like Follow Your Heart brand best. You can use regular mayo if you'd like too. Just note that the sauce will be vegetarian and no longer vegan.
- Dill pickles - the flavor is much better when you use dill pickles and chop them yourselves. Relish isn't the same.
- Lemon juice - freshly squeezed! It adds great acidity and freshness.
- Capers - another layer of salty, brine-y perfection. In my opinion, the capers take this recipe to the next level.
- Dill - freshly chopped dill adds freshness and authentic flavor to our tartar sauce. You can replace it with 1 teaspoon dried dill in a pinch.
- Salt and pepper - just a pinch to bring the flavors together.
How to make vegan tartar sauce:
Chop: Dice the dill pickle, mince the capers, chop the fresh dill.
Mix and serve: Stir everything together in a small bowl and serve. If your mayo was not refrigerated, place in the fridge to chill for 1-2 hours.
Leftovers?
Store leftovers in a lidded container or jar in the fridge for 5-7 days. Freezing is not recommended.
Ways to use tartar sauce:
- It's great on any seafood-esque dish like these vegan crab cakes.
- Our family tradition is to eat it with fries!
- It adds great flavor to sandwiches, wraps, and burgers.
- Use it in place of mayo in this vegan tuna or vegan egg salad!
