Reasons to love this recipe!
- Tips are included for making the creamiest homemade hummus!
- When you make it at home you control the quality of ingredients. You can taste the difference.
- It's gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, and healthy to boot.
Ingredients and substitutions:
- Lemon juice - freshly squeezed only!
- Tahini - I like runny tahini and am partial to Simple Truth Tahini (sold at Kroger stores) and Soom Foods Tahini. Good tahini makes all the difference here!
- Garlic - one fresh clove.
- Olive oil - choose an oil with good flavor. You'll notice it in the finished hummus. I used Kirkland Organic Olive oil from Costco.
- Water - we start with a ¼ cup and add more if you like your hummus thinner and a bit creamier. I usually add another 2 tablespoons.
- Salt - to bring out the flavors in the hummus!
- Cumin - a classic spice found in hummus. It adds depth of flavor.
- Chickpeas - I used canned, but you can also cook your own at home.
- Everything bagel seasoning - If you haven't heard of everything bagel seasoning, it is the addictive seasoning that they put on top of everything bagels! You can make your own at home, or find it at your local grocery store. I buy it at Trader Joe's, Kroger stores, or on Amazon.
- Celery - the perfect vehicle for dipping in our hummus! Dandy brand celery is crisp and sweet - the best around!
How to make everything bagel hummus:
Process liquids: Add the lemon juice, tahini, olive oil, water and garlic to a food processor fitted with the S blade. Process until smooth with no visible pieces of garlic, about 2 minutes. Scrape the bottom, tahini tends to get stuck there, and process again.
Add chickpeas: Add in the salt, cumin, and chickpeas. Process until super smooth and creamy, about 4-5 minutes, scraping down the sides as needed.
Pulse in seasoning: Add in 1 tablespoon of the everything but the bagel seasoning and pulse to mix. Serve topped with olive oil and more seasoning!
Storage:
Store leftover hummus in a lidded container in the fridge for up to 7 days.
For longer storage, freeze the hummus for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge and give it a good stir before serving. Some water separation as it thaws is normal.
What should I serve with hummus?
We are partial to Dandy Celery since it is so sweet, juicy, and crisp! You can also serve it with the following:
- Crackers or chips: Pita chips are great. Tortilla chips are always a crowd pleaser. And bagel chips would be very appropriate here!
- Veggies: celery, carrot, cucumber, zucchini, sugar snap peas, etc.
- Sandwich: use it as a spread for your favorite sandwich. It would be great with this veggie number!
- On a bagel: a breakfast favorite! Such a great way to get in some protein.
- On toast: then top it with sliced cucumber and more everything but the bagel seasoning!
- Savory bowls: add a dollop to grain and veggie bowls for a creamy protein boost!
How to make super smooth and creamy hummus!
The key to making smooth and creamy hummus is simple: blend, blend, blend!
You do not need to peel the chickpeas. Who has the time for that?
We won't be adding baking soda. Still not convinced that works.
Or doing any other fancy tricks. It's simple. Blend your hummus in the food processor until it is silky smooth. It will take several minutes of blending, so keep at it. The result is silky smooth hummus like you've never made before!
